PERFECTLY FUCKED UP FOR YOU
October 2 – November 30, 2010
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 2, 7–10pm
For its inaugural exhibition, Los Caminos is pleased to present Perfectly Fucked Up for You, the first solo presentation of RJ Messineo’s work in Saint Louis. Playing off of the domesticity of the apartment gallery, Messineo constructs paintings from wooden latticework and window screens, exploring the barriers that hinder understanding in relationships between two people.
Throughout the exhibition, Messineo creates inversions and pairings between the paintings, photographs, and sculptures on display, uniting an artistic inquiry with a personal one. Though initially distant in their geometric abstraction, the works in this exhibition also resonate on a more intimate level. Messineo parallels the subjective act of interpreting an artwork with that of understanding one’s partner.
In both art and relationships, original intentions become displaced as one filters reception through a personal lens. Perfectly Fucked Up for You demonstrates that the very accumulation of flawed parts—in both art and in personal relations—can surprisingly produce a sort of perfection.
RJ Messineo earned an MFA from UCLA (2009) and a BFA from Cornell University (2002). She has had solo exhibitions at Imprenta, Los Angeles (2009) and Steve Turner Contemporary, Los Angeles (2010); and Messineo’s work has also been included in group exhibitions at REDCAT, Los Angeles; Redling Fine Art, Los Angeles and Boots Contemporary Art Space, Saint Louis. RJ currently lives and works in Saint Louis.
